Despite
it's tiny size (population 1,000) and quiet remoteness, Jausiers
and it's bigger sister Barcelonette, have an extraordinary and International
cultural heritage with a unique connection to Mexico (of all countries!).
At the beginning
of the C19th, the three Jausiers-born Arnaud brothers left the tranquility
of the Ubaye Valley, travelling first to Louisiana, USA and then
Mexico , where they made their fortunes in the textile and garment
industries. Inviting their former school chums to benefit from their
experience and sucess, 68 imposing bourgeois 'maison de noble' were
built in the two towns by the returning immigrants, adding an unexpected,
quirky and stately ambience to these two hidden-away towns.
Jausiers is a very pretty and unspoilt Alpine village in every way.
There is the most amazing boulangerie (the honey and walnut tart
is worth the trip in itself), a smattering of small shops, a beautiful
book shop/newsagent/cyber café (yes beautiful!), a small
but news-filled Tourism Office with a great staff of welcoming locals
always ready with the latest scoop and bundles of ideas. There's
a Church, a ski hire store as well as our cosy eco-conscious studio
where we hope to host you!
Jausiers is a real-life village, not a ski resort, so the
ambience is authentic and friendly.
